Is Discord about to accept crypto payment options? – CryptoMode

For those who may not know, Discord is text, voice, and video messaging software. It allows people to join and build communities as well as talk to others in private conversations.

Like Facebook mixed with Slack but targeted at gamers and content creators.

Discord Nitro is popular

Although it is free, there is a payment option to boost your account called “Nitro”. It includes the ability to stream better quality videos to your servers, add animated emoticons, and many other features.

This has proven to be very popular with its users, but not cheap with plans starting at $ 99 USD per year. Over the years, some users have criticized Discord for strongly promoting Nitro and presenting itself as “greedy.”

This isn’t the only thing Discord has had a backlash for – the platform has also become fertile ground for scams, including crypto and NFTs in particular.

Many users have grown weary of the app and many have avoided legitimate crypto / NFT servers due to the bad taste the social media platform left in their mouths.

The CEO of the platform (Jason Lemon) recently tweeted that didn’t help in his quest to come across as less money-grabbing. He posted this image on his twitter:

Essentially, Citron teased that Discord had integrated the wallet service and gateway known as MetaMasque associated with the chain independent Web3 open protocol WalletConnect to accept crypto payments.

The crypto icon ‘Ethereum’ is also present in the image, suggesting that ETH is the preferred crypto payment.

This tweet was not well received as users of the social media app started canceling their nitro subscriptions and were largely negative in the comments on Twitter.

The CEO of Discord quickly backed down after the severe backlash. He tweeted the following statement:

“Thanks for all the views everyone. We currently have no plans to ship this concept internally. For now, our focus is on protecting users from spam, scams, and fraud. Web3 has a lot of good ones but also a lot of problems that we have to solve on our own scale. More soon.”

We’re not sure if this was just a concept or a fully developed feature and now we’ve realized that this is wrong in the eyes of their user base. In the latter case, it would be a costly mistake to learn and a bad press for the company. Not all press is good press, especially when your audience is large.

A sign of things to come?

What we do know is that the words current plans are a clue – suggesting that they will add crypto as an option in the future. It’s entirely possible that they’re waiting until their users are more open to crypto payments, or at least the drama is over.

Whether they add it or not (but let’s face it, they are invested in making it happen), it’s good that Citron has indicated that they are focusing on beefing up security and protecting their users from threats. crooks. This will undoubtedly add more confidence to their existing and future user base.
