Microsoft has invested millions of dollars in a new open source project called Decentraland.
Decentraland is the 3D virtual world accessible using any VR device, including mobile devices. An added benefit of this world is that it emphasizes decentralization, making it harder for censors to block or suppress information or experiences in the VR world.
The VR world is made up of land which can be purchased by users of this VR platform for real money. As stated on their website, Decentraland is not just words, but rather a real blueprint for creating a fully decentralized VR metaverse. All virtual “lands” will be owned directly by the community that created them. No person or company will be able to control the world.
Virtual land is represented by ownership of Ethereum-based tokens (ERC-20) called MANA which can be purchased with US Dollars, Ether, or Bitcoin.
Since Decentraland is decentralized, there are very few rules in the VR world that this community has to follow. Some of the basic rules of this virtual reality world include a ban on illegal activities and no party is allowed to own more than 50% of Decentraland land.
In addition to buying land, users will be able to build homes, casinos, markets, and other experiences in their 3D world. Users will be able to sell items and experiences in the world. These activities will be facilitated by tokens called MANA which will also serve as currency for users to purchase items, buildings and other virtual goods.
Those without access to VR devices such as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headsets can still access the Decentraland world through their web browser.
By making Decentraland a VR platform, the VR world will be less accessible to those trying to censor its content compared to traditional websites and other social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter which are more easily accessible. censored.
The Decentraland team has opened up its virtual reality world by establishing a land auction where virtual land will be sold to the highest bidder. This will allow people who missed the initial MANA token sale to buy a piece of this virtual reality world.
It is important to note that even though Decentraland is an open source project, it still has a board of directors made up of developers and other members overseeing the virtual world. These individuals will be responsible for taking action against users who do not follow Decentraland’s Community Guidelines.
Decentraland is inspired by a famous novel written by Ernest Cline called Ready Player One which was made into a Hollywood movie in 2018. In this book, all humans spend their time in a fully immersive virtual reality world called Oasis.
This VR world is free from censorship, control and manipulation by authorities. It’s also a place where everyone can be whoever they want without judgment or consequences for their actions.
This protocol-level technology will revolutionize the Internet, Web 3.0, and the Metaverse as we know it today.
What I am, I write.
