Sony is closing several payment options for purchasing PlayStation 3 and PS Vita digital content this month, removing the ability to use credit cards, Paypal, and other payment methods.
Fans of classic PlayStation consoles are well aware that Sony has attempted to shut down its online services for these platforms. Sony announced the closure of the PlayStation Store in March, but then reversed that decision and decided to keep those stores online. You’re going to have a hard time buying stuff towards the end of this month, however: Sony is closing several payment options on the store for both platforms.
What happens with PlayStation 3 and PS Vita payments?
As Siliconera reports, Sony has updated its “Important Notice” page on the PlayStation Support website; this web page is typically used to announce the shutdown of various web services. A new entry debuted today with some unfortunate news for owners of PlayStation 3 and PS Vita.
“As of October 27, 2021, you will no longer be able to use a credit or debit card, or a payment method such as PayPal, to purchase digital content or add funds to your wallet when you visit [PlayStation] Store on your [PS3] console or PS Vita system, ”the ad read.
Don’t sound the doomsday bells just yet, you will still be able to purchase digital content on the PS3 and PS Vita. Even though this ends the ability to use credit / debit cards and other payment options on the PS3 and PS Vita, you can still top up your PlayStation Store wallet on a PC, mobile device, or console. Newer PlayStation. If those aren’t options, you can still buy and redeem PlayStation Store gift cards.
Unfortunately, things are a bit worse for Japanese gamers – as the Japanese version of the announcement indicates, the ability to purchase games rated 18+ will effectively be removed by this change since purchasing these games requires a direct purchase.
Aside from this new speed bump, the PlayStation Store will remain open on these older consoles for the foreseeable future. PlayStation fans are very stubborn and will go to great lengths to preserve old games, so I’m sure they will find something when the inevitable shutdown of old consoles comes along as well.
